Post lingual hearing loss is when hearing loss occurs after acquisition of speech.
This group does not use Sign Language – communication is done by means of lip reading/speech enhanced with gestures/hearing aids or a combination thereof, and the use of a lip speaker as an interpreter, if required.
They see themselves as persons with a disability, as they have suffered a loss, use assistive devices and follow a rehabilitative process.
Their key objectives are:
-
To develop an open, informed society which allows two-way communication between persons experiencing hearing loss and the hearing community by way of awareness raising and sensitization.
-
To provide expertise and assistance regarding assistance devices to enhance the quality of living of persons experiencing hearing loss.
-
To build a fully accessible eco-, built-, physical- and social environment for persons experiencing
hearing loss. -
To develop a database and to promote informed decision making to the benefit of persons experiencing hearing loss and their families.
-
To empower persons experiencing hearing loss with knowledge in order for them to be able to represent themselves regarding awareness, accessibility and employment.
